You’re a Lotus
The Four Stages of Self-Awareness “framework” unveils how you respond to discomfort, and what you can do to live with intention. By asking this simple question, we can get to know a lot about ourselves. We can treat ourselves with more kindness, compassion, and love.
Before you review your results:
The Four Stages of Self-Awareness “framework”, describes a cycle, we all experience when facing discomfort. If you look hard enough at your life, you’ll discover moments when you behaved like a Lotus, Survivor, Warrior, or Phoenix.
Even though the stages move in a cycle, no stage is better or worse than another. Each stage teaches us something different about ourselves; they work together to help us become more self-aware. They help us learn how we currently act so we can decide how we WANT to act.
So what does it mean to be a Lotus?
The Lotus Stage symbolizes spiritual enlightenment and rebirth. Like the Lotus Flower, it can bloom beautifully from the murkiest waters.
In other words,
The Lotus Stage recognizes your willingness to live. As the first stage of self-awareness, you’re learning to acknowledge how you respond to discomfort. You’re open to the idea that feeling discomfort is not as scary as you thought.
Some Lotuses want to avoid discomfort at all costs because it feels heavy. The thought of facing the parts of themselves that they don’t like can feel overwhelming, and who can blame them? Being self-aware gets real.
Believe it or not, this is normal for Lotuses,
Because they are noticing their actions, habits, and how it impacts them – it feels unfamiliar and unpleasant. Naturally, Lotuses can sometimes feel cloudy and confused at this stage.
At the same time,
They want to be kinder with themselves, creative and tap deeper into their overall power, but often feel far from it, because they struggle to take action when discomfort shows up. Deep down, Lotuses know that this stage is temporary, and they’ll bloom again.
You are the embodiment of the Lotus.
What's Your Superpower?
The Power to Choose
Lotuses have a deep desire to bloom. Even when feeling lost or stuck, they know in their heart that they can develop a stronger sense of self and not let discomfort call the shots.
Lotuses want to experience more peace and joy, knowing that their struggles with discomfort were not in vain. Their Power to Choose how they respond is their secret weapon to manifesting a life where they often feel light like a feather because a huge weight has been lifted off their shoulders.
Key Takeaway
If Lotuses want to bloom and remain grounded in the presence of any discomfort, they must harness that power as often as they can.
Because sometimes, Lotuses can forget that they can focus on the things they can control in their lives.
The Two Types of Lotuses
Potential Challenges
There are two types of Lotuses: the Reactive Lotus and the Responsive Lotus.
The Reactive Lotus tends to avoid taking responsibility and gets thrown off at any sight of discomfort. The Responsive Lotus, on the other hand, focuses on what they can control and actively chooses to acknowledge themselves with grace when feeling discomfort.
Most people go back and forth between the two. If you’re reading this, you’re currently a Responsive Lotus!
For the most part, Lotuses struggle with understanding how they feel. Acknowledging their feelings is difficult because they don’t know why they feel that way. This is especially true when faced with abrupt changes and not feeling in control. It is also a sign that Lotuses are more reactive than responsive.
This frustration, it’s usually a sign that Lotuses haven’t embraced responsibility. Without consciously choosing how to respond to their life circumstances, they struggle to align with their most authentic self and bloom.
Key Takeaway
It’s important to know that Lotuses can move beyond these potential challenges. They can become the architects of their lives, be at peace with themselves, and genuinely feel courageous. It all comes down to shifting from being a Reactive Lotus to a Responsive Lotus.
Helpful Next Steps
If Lotuses want acknowledge their feelings with grace, they must accept that they are responsible for their choices. They must spend more time becoming Responsive Lotuses. Some Reactive Lotuses find this extremely difficult, because they associate responsibility with blame, and blame with punishment. After all, no one likes being punished when things go “wrong, ” which is a form of discomfort.
But accepting responsibility doesn’t mean getting punished. Taking responsibility is the missing piece of the puzzle to choosing ourselves over and over again without feeling guilt or shame, especially when we feel uncomfortable.
When Lotuses embrace responsibility, they unleash their superpower: The Power to Choose how they respond. They finally are able to acknowledge their feelings because they stop avoiding the discomfort that comes from being responsible for themselves. Lotuses feel like they’re where they’re supposed to be, doing what they’re supposed to be doing. They feel full.
Reactive Lotuses tend to resist this process because they don’t know where to begin. Like cleaning a closet for the first time in years, they may feel overwhelmed, confused, and uninterested.
The best place to start is by meeting yourself where you are. Being available to see how you show up in the presence of responsibility.
Here’s my simple 4 step-by-step method to embrace responsibility and get started. Yes, answering these questions might feel a little uncomfortable, that’s ok, try it anyway!
- Where do you feel the most stuck right now? (ex: my healing, career, romantic relationships, friendships, family, etc.)
- What is it about this specific area of your life, that makes you feel stuck? (ex: uncertainty, confusion, frustration, etc.)
- List 10 things you can control or do about this situation (ex: your response, your attitude, your actions, etc.)
- What’s the smallest step you can take in the next 10 minutes? (ex: write down 3 things you wanna change, write down your biggest challenge, make a list of things you want to stop doing, etc.)
Bonus: For the next 30 days – focus on doing the 10 things you can control about this situation. Use that information to spot any patterns, to help you strengthen your responsibility muscle.
Key Takeaway
When we take time to see how we accept or deflect responsibility, we understand why we tend to be more reactive than responsive. In other words, we put ourselves in a position to shape our reality with action.
We become a force to be reckoned with.
